Geography is part of Trivial Plus. It is the topic where the obvious answer is most often wrong, because good geography questions are built around exceptions: the capital that is not the biggest city, the border that is not where you would expect.
The sample below is weighted toward those exceptions, since they are what actually comes up.
Which country has the northernmost capital city of any sovereign state?
Iceland (Reykjavík)
Reykjavík sits at about 64°N. Nuuk in Greenland is further north, but Greenland is a self-governing part of the Kingdom of Denmark rather than a sovereign state, which is exactly the trap in the options.
Which of these South American countries is landlocked?
Paraguay
South America has two landlocked countries, Paraguay and Bolivia. Bolivia lost its coastline to Chile in the War of the Pacific (1879 to 1884) and still keeps a navy on Lake Titicaca.
Which capital was formed by merging towns on opposite banks of the Danube?
Budapest
Buda and Óbuda on the hilly west bank and Pest on the flat east bank were united in 1873. The name simply joins the two main halves.
Which island is shared by three countries: Brunei, Malaysia and Indonesia?
Borneo
Borneo is the third-largest island in the world and the only island divided among three countries. New Guinea and Hispaniola are each split between two.
Which city is South Africa's administrative capital?
Pretoria
South Africa has three capitals: Pretoria (executive and administrative), Cape Town (legislative) and Bloemfontein (judicial). Johannesburg, the largest city, is none of them.
Which of the Great Lakes lies entirely within the United States?
Lake Michigan
The other four are shared with Canada. Hydrologically, Michigan and Huron are a single lake joined at the Straits of Mackinac, which makes for a good follow-up question.
What is the name of the world's highest uninterrupted waterfall, in Venezuela?
Type the answer
Angel Falls
It drops about 979 m in total, with an unbroken plunge of about 807 m, off the edge of the tabletop mountain Auyán-tepui. It is named after the American pilot Jimmie Angel, who flew over it in the 1930s.
Which sea has no coastline at all?
The Sargasso Sea
It sits in the middle of the North Atlantic and is defined by the ocean currents that circle it rather than by land. It is named after the floating sargassum seaweed that collects there.
With which country does France share its longest land border?
Brazil
French Guiana, an overseas region of France in South America, shares a border of about 730 km with Brazil. The longest border in metropolitan France, with Spain, is a little shorter.
Which river flows through or along the borders of the most countries?
The Danube
Ten countries, from Germany to Ukraine, and four capitals on its banks: Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and Belgrade. The Nile basin covers more countries, but the river itself touches fewer.
Which country is completely surrounded by South Africa?
Lesotho
Lesotho is one of only three countries entirely enclosed by a single other country, along with San Marino and Vatican City (both inside Italy). Eswatini is the near miss: it also borders Mozambique.
What is the driest non-polar desert on Earth?
The Atacama
Some weather stations in Chile's Atacama have recorded almost no rain for years at a time. Mountains on both sides block moisture, and a cold ocean current offshore keeps the air dry. Antarctica's Dry Valleys are drier still, hence the word "non-polar".
Many countries split their capital functions. South Africa is the classic case, and quiz questions will specify "administrative", "legislative" or "judicial" for exactly that reason.
Remember overseas territories when a question asks about borders. They redraw a lot of "obvious" answers.
In a room, every correct answer is worth 500 points plus a speed bonus of up to 500 more, so knowing it fast matters as much as knowing it. The full rules are on How to Play.
Every question on this page was first served in a real Trivial game, then pulled from the game's question bank, checked against the answer and rewritten with an explanation. Questions whose answer is disputed were left out. If you think one is wrong, email support@flayrlabs.com and we will fix it. The library overview explains the process in more detail.
Empires, treaties and explorers, plus the gods and monsters of five traditions.
Flags, firsts, words and oddities: the pub-quiz staples.
